چکیده

A cral volar skin is the most prevalent site of malignant melanoma in nonwhite populations. In 2007, our group proposed a 3-step algorithm for the management of acquired melanocytic lesions affecting acral volar skin (Figure 1). We now know that almost all acral melanomas arise de novo, not in association with a preexisting acral nevus. Given that an acral nevus has virtually no risk of developing to acral melanoma, follow-up of a definitely diagnosed acral nevus is not necessary. Taking this point into account, we have revised the 3-step algorithm. In the revised algorithm, the order of the second and the third steps in the previous algorithm is reversed, and a new category without need of further follow-up is introduced.

Key points in dermoscopic differentiation between early acral melanoma and acral nevus.

Acral skin is the most prevalent site of malignant melanoma in non-Caucasian populations. On acral skin, other various kinds of pigmented lesions are also detected. Particularly, melanocytic nevus is commonly seen on acral volar skin; approximately 10% of Japanese have a nevus on their soles. Prognosis of acral melanoma is still generally poor because of delayed detection in the advanced stages...

Dermoscopic patterns of benign volar melanocytic lesions in patients with atypical mole syndrome.

BACKGROUND Acral benign melanocytic lesions in white populations, particularly in subjects with atypical mole syndrome, have been poorly characterized until recently. The advent of dermoscopy has enabled more specific diagnoses of these pigmented skin lesions. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the clinical and dermoscopic features of benign volar lesions in a group of white patients with atypical mole sy...

Dermoscopic patterns of 158 acral melanocytic nevi in a Latin American population.

BACKGROUND Melanocytic nevi are frequently found on acral volar skin. Differentiation between nevi and melanoma is essential and sometimes difficult, although dermoscopy has enabled a more specific diagnosis of pigmented lesions. Dermoscopic patterns of lesions on acral volar skin have mostly been described in European and Asian populations. The Latin American population is heterogeneous, and p...
